***We are recycling this post from last year to reminisce how we almost had a white Christmas. May you have a festive and joyful holiday season!***
So by now we've all got our own collections of Snow Day Houston photos, right?! You have to admit, that fantastic morning has given us all so much extra holiday cheer! As difficult as this year has been for Houston and for our country, I've decided not to analyze my whimsy but instead full-on embrace it. Buckle up, guys and gals. This blog post is all glittery, sparkly, dreamy holiday goodness! I've got reading recommendations, movie recommendations and unabashed cover crush eye candy. If you need more holiday cheer, stop by our Events at HPL page to see what's coming to a neighborhood library near you!
Do you know of a happier, more fun Christmas movie? Many people have created holiday traditions surrounding this feature film starring Will Ferrell, and it is no surprise why! Follow this hilariously oblivious elf while he tries to figure out life amidst the news that he's not a real elf.
I'm in a store and I'm singing!
Two magicians battle it out for the most amazing and awe-inspiring tricks and they may or may not end up falling in love in the process. Your senses will be alive with the sights and sounds of the most magical circus you've ever visited. ...The only movement within the circus is the clock that ticks by the passing minutes, if such a wonder of sculpture can even be called a clock. The circus looks abandoned and empty. But you think perhaps you can smell caramel wafting through the evening breeze, beneath the crisp scent of the autumn leaves. A subtle sweetness at the edges of the cold. The sun disappears completely beyond the horizon, and the remaining luminosity shifts from dusk to twilight. The people around you are growing restless from waiting, a sea of shuffling feet, murmuring about abandoning the endeavor in search of someplace warmer to pass the evening. You yourself are debating departing when it happens.
Nostalgia alert! I have so many fond memories of this movie, and even remember when the stores started selling the voice recorder used by Kevin in the movies to thwart the thieves (I really needed it). Left all alone to his own devices, Kevin McCallister has to be super creative and devious when trying to protect his home from robbers. Great music, plenty of snow, and definitely some warm fuzzy moments make this one a definite favorite for me.
Keep the change, ya filthy animal.
Nostalgia alert x2! This beautiful, classic picture book tells a gentle tale of a father and daughter going out for night-time owl watching. Wintry country landscapes and cool blue and black watercolors make this a soothing read to come back to season after season.
When you go owling / you don't need words / or warm / or anything but hope. That's what Pa says.
For me, this is the ultimate holiday rom-com. Maybe even the ultimate other times of the year rom-com. Christmas in London (the imagery that brings up is magical enough as it is right?!) is bringing everyone together; even the most unlikely couples. Each story is heart warming and heart breaking in its own wonderful way. You'll just have to watch to know!
Worse than the total agony of being in love?
That's about all I've got, Houston! I leave you to find your own magic in the next few weeks and hold on to it and carry it with you into the new year. Don't forget to check our Events at HPL page for upcoming fun. Also, here are some photos from my own snowy morning. :0)
